The Private Library Book Company presents for sale the library of renowned author and critic John Russell Taylor (1935-2025), a collection of over 20,000 books, many by John himself, ranging from the fine and decorative arts to drama, cinema, music, poetry, literary studies, biography, bibliography, and London topography. These are the books which John amassed from childhood and which accompanied him throughout his long and eventful career, illustrating the breadth and depth of his erudition and underpinning the important contribution he made to the cultural life of his times. We begin with a selection of some 5,000 books from John's art library, recalling his work as art critic of The Times over a period of almost 30 years.
